The Math/Science Department at Carson High School offers a wide range of classes.
In the majority of math classes it is recommended that math students have in their possession their own personal math/scientific calculator.
ALGEBRA I * Full Year * 9 10 11 12
An introductory course in algebra emphasizing the nature and use of variables. This course guides the student in discovering mathematical principles and furnishes the student with a variety of math exercise material to strengthen these concepts. Prerequisites: Geometry
ALGEBRA II * Full year * 10 11 12
A second course in algebra designed to extend the student's knowledge of basic algebra. Emphasis is placed on strengthening the student's problem solving techniques and preparation for further studies in mathematics. Prerequisites: Algebra I and Geometry.
ALGEBRA III * Semester/Full Year * 11 12
This course is designed for the student who has completed Algebra II but is not ready for trigonometry. This course will build confidence in algebraic skills while reviewing and expanding on topics involved in Algebra II. It is intended to help the student be more successful on college entrance tests. A graphing calculator is recommended. Prerequisite: Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II.
CALCULUS * Full Year * 12
An introductory course in calculus and analytic geometry for those students who have completed math courses up through trigonometry. Students may gain college credit by passing the advanced placement examination. Prerequisites: Trigonometry.
DEVELOPMENTAL MATH * Semester * 12
This class serves as a remediation course for students who have failed the mathematics portion of the Nevada State Proficiency Exam. Enrollment is by recommendation of Department Chair.
GEOMETRY * Full Year * 9 10 11 12
This course emphasizes geometric concepts and is designed to develop logical thinking and understanding of mathematical proofs. The student's knowledge of algebra will be reinforced. Prerequisite: Algebra I.
PRE-ALGEBRA * Full Year * 9 10 11
Pre-Algebra is designed to strengthen the student’s understanding of math principles and fundamentals. The course concentrates on making math skills automatic through repetitive practice, integration, and manipulative, and is intended as a bridge between arithmetic and algebra
TRIGONOMETRY/ PRE-CALCULUS * Full Year * 11 12
Trigonometry - The aim of this section of the course is to enable the student to grasp trigonometric principles and to be able to apply them in various fields of mathematics and science.
Pre-Calculus - This section of the course provides preparation for college courses in calculus and abstract algebra. A scientific calculator is required. A graphing calculator is recommended. Prerequisites: Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II.
ASTRONOMY * Semester * 10 11 12
This course is designed for the student with an interest in astronomy. Students will study the main topics in astronomy such as the solar system, stars, galaxies, constellations and the Universe. There will be various types of labs and projects using analysis, observations, and calculators as well as supplementary audiovisual materials. Lab fee: $5 per year.
BIOLOGY * Full Year * 10 11 12
General biology is a laboratory-oriented course consisting of the study of the basis of life and the structure and function of cells as they relate to plants, animals and micro-organisms. Included will be the study of the groups of animals beginning with the simplest and progressing to the most complex. (Ninth grade students with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better from middle school may enroll in biology.)
BOTANY/ZOOLOGY * Semester/Full Year * 10 11 12
Botany/Zoology is a laboratory-oriented course designed to acquaint the student with the biological studies of anatomy, physiology, taxonomy, ecology, genetics, and inter-relationship of plant and animal life. One major project is required each semester. Prerequisite: Biology.
CHEMISTRY * Full Year * 10 11 12
Chemistry is a laboratory-oriented course emphasizing the use of mathematics and chemical equations. This course investigates the areas of chemical families, chemical reactions, gas laws, equilibrium, solubility, organic chemistry and qualitative analysis. Prerequisites: Algebra I and Geometry. Lab fee: $5 per year.
CHEMISTRY, ADVANCED * Full Year * 11 12
Advanced Chemistry is a college level, self directed, lab oriented course focusing on the in-depth study of chemistry. Prerequisites: Chemistry, Algebra II. Lab fee: $15 per year.
EARTH/ENVIRONMENT * Full Year * 9
This course is designed for the student that is interested in learning more about the physical world in which they live. Emphasis will be placed on studies in the processes that formed the earth and it's environments, our use of energy and mineral resources, population growth and food needs, and the future of the earth.
ECOLOGICAL BIOLOGY * Full Year * 10 11 12
This course will combine the sciences of Ecology and Biology. It is designed as a field/laboratory oriented course using the local natural surroundings to study ecosystems and the relationships between living things and their environments. Students will learn to relate their studies to the world as a whole.
DISCOVERY SCIENCE * Full Year * 9 10 11
This course explores the four major realms of science: biology, chemistry, physics, and earth science. Students will study the human body, ecology, atomic structure, chemical reactions, forms of energy, geology, and astronomy. Methods of study will include laboratory work, lectures, group discovery, library research, and demonstrations.
GEOLOGY * Semester * 10 11 12
This course is an introductory course dealing with the earth's geologic history, mineralogy, the internal processes of volcanism and tectonics, and the earth's external processes of weathering and erosion.
HUMAN ANATOMY * Full Year * 10 11 12
This course is designed to introduce the student to the structure and function of the various systems of the body. The student will learn in depth the various parts of each system, what makes them function, and how these systems relate to each other. Study of this course will be through lecture and lab methods. Prerequisite: Biology
HUMAN ANATOMY, ADVANCED * Full Year * 11 12
This course is designed for the serious student who is interested in medicine or its related fields. Subject matter will cover the biochemistry and physiological functions and structures of the various organs and systems of the human body. This course is designed as an independent study class. Prerequisites: Human Anatomy, Chemistry, and Biology. Lab fee: $15 per year.
